Amatsu therapy is a modern adaptation of a soft tissue therapy that has been used for thousands of years
Amatsu Therapy is a unique soft tissue therapy based on Japanese medicine, research and science.
Today’s science is showing that the source of many painful conditions like muscular pain, joint stiffness, slow recovery from injuries and mobility issues are caused by unknown fascia/skin (myofascial) restrictions and postural misalignment.
Amatsu treatments specialises in finding the causes of the fascia restrictions which are rarely located where the pain is happening.
The potential benefits of restoring a natural free flowing moving body:
- Reduces the effects of painful symptoms and conditions
- Speeds up the recovery time and helps prevent further injury
- Restores overall strength, increases energy levels and reduces stress
How does Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy work?
Amatsu therapy applies gentle soft tissue treatments that quietly release fascia restrictions and improve postural alignment. The treatment plan and rehabilitation programs will help treat a broad range of painful conditions and injuries:
- Back, Neck, Shoulder, Arms, Hips, Legs and Feet.
- Sports Injuries, Mobility Issues and Postural Problems
- Pain relief from headaches, Fibromyalgia and Arthritis
Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy uses soft tissue and mobilisation techniques that are rooted in the ancient Japanese ‘feeling’ practised by Dr Hatsumi and developed by Dennis Bartram. Together they provide Amatsu with a unique set of treatment protocols for clients with injuries or suffering from a condition causing pain . The gentle techniques are movement orientated and engage with the body’s soft tissue to initiate movement at an injury site. This helps to release painful spasms or restrictions around the injury and, therefore, supports the rebuilding of healthy neurological patterns and global body balance or proprioception.
The same soft tissue treatment techniques will also help with:
- Better movement, improves mobility and our well-being
- Freeing trapped nerves, Improving Circulation including the Lymphatic system
- and many more conditions as listed on the website

In depth about Amatsu The Go-Dai, Proprioception, and Gairon – The Philosophy behind Amatsu
The Go-Dai:
One of the principle philosophies of Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy is that of the Go-dai.
Go-dai means the ‘Big Five’ and it focuses on the inter-reaction of the five major body systems. These are:
- Physical – structure, bones, muscles, ligaments, viscera
- Mental – thought processes, emotions, beliefs and values
- Electrical – energy systems, nervous system and energy levels
- Chemical – hormones, digestive system and the food you eat
- Environmental – where, when and how you do what you do
In essence, the principle is that none of these systems work in isolation, they are interconnected. Therefore, treating with Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy techniques will have an impact not only on the physical, but on all of the other systems.
It is becoming well documented that our emotions and the physical body are interconnected. For example, we are all familiar with the likelihood of stress or mental anxiety leading to physical tension in a part of the body such as the neck and shoulders. Similarly, our energy levels (and/or digestive system) can be affected by physical pain in our joints or muscles and the postural choices that we make at work or in the car can lead to tension and pain in the body. Thus everything within the body is linked and Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy treats the body as a whole rather than just the individual symptoms. In today’s modern world where many of us live with consistently high levels of stress, it is vital for this to be considered within any treatment that you may receive.
By treating the whole body, all of the elements will be able to work together to regain better health, function and balance. Regaining the natural, healthy patterns relevant to you is the aim of every Amatsu Orthopathic Therapy treatment (balance).
What is Gairon?
Gairon is the foundation of Amatsu Orthopath therapy. It is pronounced Guy-ron which loosely translates to mean “the bigger picture, consider everything, discount nothing, use the best available and find that which is not obvious.”
Therefore, your Amatsu Orthopath practitioner is trained to consider the bigger picture of any problem or symptom. For example, a bad knee could be because of a direct injury on the knee. However, it is also likely that the posture (total body position) and the natural walking and standing pattern of the client has led to the progressive damage and degeneration of the knee, therefore creating a vulnerable area.
Amatsu Orthopathic therapy is different because it considers not only the localised condition within the knee, but also the bigger picture of the other stresses, strains and torsions that are placed on the knee by the whole body.
Amatsu and Proprioception
It is important to talk about proprioception in relation to Amatsu because every balance (treatment) aims to support its restoration to your injury sites and your whole body. Proprioception refers to the body’s ability to sense movement, enabling us to know where our limbs are in space without having to consciously look. This system is subconscious, which means that we don’t have to think about making the movements. Sometimes the reactions take place so fast they are termed reflexive. Proprioception is important in all of our everyday movements and, in particular, during complicated movements where precise co-ordination is essential; such as those in sporting activities.
